'Geostorm' is directed by Dean Devlin and it's another one of these run of the mill disaster films like The Day After Tomorrow (2004), 2012 (2009) and the most recent San Andreas (2015). All of which are where special effects outshine other important foundations of what makes a solidly enjoyable film such as good characters, dilemma between the characters and the arcs that they go through. Upon viewing the trailers to these, I thought this was going to suck. It has unpolished special effects and a general sense of sameness throughout, but I wanted to go see it because it had a somewhat interesting concept. After leaving the theater, I wasn't surprised that it sucked as much as I thought.

The plot of Geostorm is that in the year 2019 humanity has found a way to control the world's weather run by Jake Lawson (played by Gerard Butler), a satellite engineer and space station commander. In the beginning of this film Jake Lawson get removed from his position and his younger brother Max Lawson (played by Jim Sturgess) is ranked in a position above him. 3 years later, strange and catastrophic weather occurrences are happening and it's up to Jake Lawson to come back to the space station known as "Dutchboy" to investigate the situation.

Like I said before, the only I praise before and after seeing the film is that it has an interesting concept. The idea of humanity controlling the weather is an idea that's clearly straight out of the 90's era of disaster movies. I could've been fun and in some parts it is. The special effects are mostly good for the most part, but all they're all over the place. Still, they were much better than I thought it was going to be.

Lets just get to all the issues I have with the movie out there. On the whole, I found this movie to be kind of boring. The characters, their dynamics and the action are just plain boring. For a movie that is supposed to make you feel the terror of this weather machine turning into a weapon of mass destruction, there's just very little to no urgency. The film often gets drowned in lame and awkward humor and no one even sheds a single tear when big cities are getting destroyed by these destructive weather events which brings me to the acting. While I can't say they're Razzie worthy performances, they're just bland all around. Gerard Butler who I normally like in films like 300 (2005), P.S I Love You (2007) and The Ugly Truth (2009), he's just churning out another uninspired action hero performance from films like Law Abiding Citizen (2009), Olympus Has Fallen (2013) and London Has Fallen (2016). When I walk into a film like this I expect to at least constantly be at awe with the destruction and special effects, but it takes a long while to get there. This film moves like a snail and I just couldn't care less. The film fails to make the audiences feel any weight at all to what's going on.

I can't talk anymore about this film. While this film didn't necessarily anger me, I still feel that it's a waste of time for everybody. It's just like every other boring disaster movie that should've just stayed in the 90's and it could've been directed by someone like Roland Emmerich.

'Geostorm' gets a D
