'Coco' is another Disney film animated by Pixar and is directed by Lee Unkrich, the man behind other great Pixar films such as Toy Story 2 (1999), Monsters, Inc. (2001), Finding Nemo (2003) and Toy Story 3 (2010). I love pretty much all of those movies and I was excited for this film not only because it seemed different and it's Pixar and everybody loves Pixar like who doesn't, but because it involves a culture that I know too little about. When trailers to this film came out people were afraid that Pixar was ripping off another animated film like this which is The Book of Life (2014) which involved Día de Muertos or known in English as 'The Day of the Dead'. I didn't see that film, so I don't know how much of this film is inspired by it and only focused on what's good or bad about the film that I saw today. And once again Pixar has brought us another near-perfect film.

The story of Coco is about a little Mexican boy named Miguel, an aspiring musician who sets out to confront his family's ban of music. The musician he looks up to the most is Ernesto de la Cruz and when Miguel finds his original guitar, he strums it and finds himself in the Land of the Dead where he finds all his dead ancestors. He has to find his way out of the Land of the Dead by the morning after Día de Muertos or else he permanently joins the Land of the Dead forever.

Like all Pixar animated film from Disney, they are continuously pushing their animation to look the most beautiful and stunning as possible. This film is no exception. The way they represent the Land of the Dead is very colorful, vast and whimsical. I wished I had seen this film in 3-D because I think it would've helped with the immersion and make you feel like you're there even though the world is animated. For a film that's about the dead, it sure feels more lively than you think. The characters are really strong especially with a particular secondary character and that's due to the excellent writing. Once again Pixar has made another film that will make you laugh as well as cry your heart out. I'm serious and that's all I'm going to say as far as how this film will make you feel by the time you're done with it. That's just Pixar being Pixar. What different about this film from other Pixar projects is that this film also aims to at least inform people about the culture of Mexicans from their values, beliefs and traditions. It's definitely a film to be seen by every family from every cultural backgrounds.

My one issue with this film is that once the second act kicks in, it becomes similar to another Pixar film. If you've seen the film already, then you know which Pixar film I'm talking about. Meaning that I ended up predicting what was going to happen and I was disappointed when events that I predicted did happen.

All in all, Coco is another film that's most likely going to be one of the best animated films of all time. Pixar does what they usually do with such a fantastical and magical way that I managed to look over the predictability of the second half of the film.

'Coco' gets an A
